(AU)^iesObjective: To determine the association between thyroid hormone (TH) levels and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in patients with chronic renal insufficiency in dyalisis. Methods: 50 adult patients who were on chronic dialysis at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia hemodialysis center between January and June 2011 were included. Serum levels of total cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, PTH, albumin, TSH, T4 free, total T3 and reverse T3 were determine. The CIMT was determined using color Doppler sonography. Results: mean age was 55 years; 42% were females; thyroid abnormalities were seen in 50% of patients with sub clinical hypothyroidism the most frequent pattern of abnormality; 56% had CIMT > 0.90mm and 50% had atheromatous plaques (>1.5mm). No association between TH and CIMT was observed. Conclusions: Thyroid hormone levels are not associated with carotid intima-media thickening. (AU)^ien.
